EMILY BRYDON WINS LADIES SUPER-G BY JUST 0.07s
Men’s super combined title goes to Ryan Semple for a second time

CALGARY, AB (March 24, 2010) – Emily Brydon (Fernie, BC) won today’s GMC Canadian Championships super-G at Nakiska, AB by just 0.07s to capture the tenth national title of her career.

Brydon, who announced earlier this month that the World Cup Finals in Garmisch Partenkirchen, GER were going to be the last World Cup races of her career, finished today’s super-G in one minute 09.30s.

Britt Janyk (Whistler, BC), a two-time winner of this event at the national alpine ski championships, finished just 0.07s back with Shona Rubens (Canmore, AB), also a past champion, only 0.01s behind Janyk.

“Today was a landmark day for me,” said Brydon, who last won the super-G title in 2005 when she nearly swept all five events, missing out on only the giant slalom. “I wanted to really enjoy it. I knew I could do well but I also knew that the competition would be tough, Britt and Shona are skiing really well and I knew it was a shorter course and would be really tight.”

Brydon said that she plans to compete in both the giant slalom and slalom at the 2010 GMC Canadian Championships.

“I am going to try the GS and the slalom, just don’t expect great things. The last time I was on my GS skis was probably about two months ago,” she said.

“I was here to do well in the speed events. Now it’s about being around the young kids, and inspiring them,” Brydon added.

Stephanie Irwin (Calgary, AB) was the top junior, placing in sixth overall.

On the men’s side, Ryan Semple (Montreal, QC / Mont-Tremblant, QC) won the men’s super combined, a title he last held in 2004. Semple, who finished in 1:43.96, said leading after the opening super-G run was key to victory.

“I tried to take advantage of a good start number in the super-G,” said Semple, who wore bib #4.
“I just kept it simple and I knew that in the slalom the time was going to be easy to make up but I just tried to push as much as I could and it ended up pretty close,” he added after beating Paul Stutz (Banff, AB) buy just 0.11s.

Kelby Halbert (Bradford, ON) was the top junior in sixth.

Perhaps the most impressive result of the day came from Brad Spence (Calgary, AB), who finished in fourth place despite starting the super-G with bib #80.

The 2010 GMC Canadian Championships continue tomorrow with the men’s GS.
