The Coast Zone K2 Athletes were at Mount Seymour this past weekend for the 76th Annual Enqusit Slalom. Named after Harold Enquist, the K2 race has traditionally been held on Mount Seymour since 1936.

Soft snow conditions and the highly technical course resulted in only 12 out of 36 girls finishing the two run race. Saturday’s winner Jocelyn Ramsden said “inspection was key as course and sets were difficult because of the way the terrain fell”. Second place finisher, Taylor Green agreed, “The coaches were radioing course reports up to the start so I knew I had to watch the last flush carefully.” Kelsi Francisty of Mount Washington placed third. The boys fared better than the girls with 23 finishing out of the 48 competitors, and WMSC’s Michael Cadman winning the Gold, Ryan Hotte of Mount Washington, the silver and bronze went to Matthew Sawchyn of the WMSC.

On Sunday the athletes stepped it up with the goal to “stay up”. Madi McLeish who has been dominating the races this year was disqualified on Saturday but came back on Sunday to take first place 8 seconds ahead of Mount Washington’s Kelsi Francisty. Jocelyn Ramsden was 3nd. For the boys, it was Isacc Penn’s turn to be on top. “After falling yesterday and having to hike, today I did a longer inspection and was a bit more focused to get the job done.” Michael Cadman was 2nd and Spencer Morris 3rd, all from the WMSC.

WMSC Head K2 Coach Pierre Luc Dumoulin commented Conditions were not easy all weekend for the first slalom race of the year, we had different snow conditions as we used salt on the snow to make it harder and we don’t really train in these conditions usually “Saturday was a challenging day for everyone but Sunday everyone stepped it up a notch to give their best for a spectacular race full of impressive performance from all of the zone athletes. It was good to finish it up with a good race in preparation for the Provincial Championship that will start in less then two weeks.” Special thanks goes out to the Mount Seymour Ski Club, parents, volunteers and coaches for hosting such a great event.

The Harold Enquist Memorial Trophy, dating from 1953 was awarded to Whistler's Michael Cadman. Second place went to Ryan Hotte of Mount Washington and third place to Isacc Penn from the WMSC. At the end of competition, the overall awards were presented for the fastest male and female athletes, based on the total time from two days of racing.
